Do What You Say You’ll Do

The mark of a professional is somebody who does what they say they’ll do, and if they cannot, they at least provide warning.

Lately, I’ve had to deal with a company that is seemingly devoid of professional conduct. After working together for nearly two months, their lack of action (after saying they’ll do something) has caused me to distrust them. Not only will they no longer receive my referrals, but I will tell people to avoid them at all costs.

Example: not returning e-mails and phone calls.

If you tell another professional that you’ll call them back in 15 minutes, you had better do it. Don’t make a liar out of yourself, and don’t keep the other person waiting.

If you leave a voice mail saying that you’ll get in touch “tomorrow”, then do it.

If you receive an e-mail requesting prompt feedback, or at least a response, do it. (Especially if the e-mail will take less than 5 minutes to send!)

I’ve been working with the joint venture group at Joint Venture Tools for nearly two years, and now I understand why Robin requires all members to follow a code of ethics. He puts “do what you say you’ll do” as one of the priorities because that’s what serious people, action-oriented people, people serious about business and making money, are all about.

If you’re tired of dealing with the losers, and want to know what it’s like to work side-by-side with eagles, those genuinely serious about providing quality joint ventures and service opportunities, I highly recommend you check out the group.

In the meantime, while working with companies on a daily basis, I recommend not lowering your standards, and make an effort to point out the issues with those whom you’re dealing. I’ve made an effort with the company mentioned earlier… we’ll see if anything changes.
